Welcome to Season 3 of The Daily Hustle Podcast, a platform that celebrates the everyday hustle of everyday people. I believe that everybody’s story matters and that success is not defined by the accolades behind your name, but by living a life of purpose.
Lindsay Henson is the Executive Director of non-profit organisation Lawyers against Abuse (LvA) in September 2014. She holds a law degree from Harvard Law School (2014) and a B.S. from the University of California, Los Angeles (2007). Before joining LvA, Lindsay worked with NGOs in India, Bangladesh, and the Philippines addressing gender-based violence and other human rights issues. She also has experience working with victims of domestic violence and sexual violence in both the criminal and civil legal systems in the United States and is admitted to the New York State Bar. We invited Lindsay on the podcast in observance of 16 Days of Activism against gender-based violence in South Africa (25 November – 10 December). It takes serious hustle to keep the lights on and the engine running in a non-profit like LvA. In this episode, Lindsay shares some of her personal journey as well as some wisdom from her experience of managing a non-profit organisation.
Paledi Segapu is an award winning fashion designer and creative entrepreneur. He is the founder and creative director or Palse, a Johannesburg-based fashion label. Born in Soweto, Paledi initially pursued a career in IT with a Bachelor of Commerce degree in Informatics. However, he yearned for the creative space, so in 2010 he left the corporate sector to pursue a career as a creative entrepreneur. With a Master of Business in Leadership degree, Paledi went on to win the prestigious 2018 Global African Business Award (GABA) for outstanding best fashion brand. This is only one of a long list of other accolades, including 2017 Special Achievement Award in Nigeria, and 2015 the Africa Designer of the year award. In 2012 he was also voted SA creative professional of the year. Paledi believes that his business background was instrumental the success he has achieved thus far in the fashion industry.
Gary Crookes is the inventor, founder and MD of ShadowBall. ShadowBall is a weighted, half a rugby ball, which is being hailed as one of the greatest new innovations in rugby. The ShadowBall is engineered to rebound off any wall and come spiralling back to the passer, and for the first time ever, it enables rugby players to train solo passing and catching. However it is more than just a ball; it has evolved into a full- fledged rugby skills training program.
Unaizah Toffar is one of the pioneers of contemporary modest fashion and design in South Africa. She started her business, Seruna Collection, before the time of Instagram and the rise of the modest fashion social influencer. In this episode we unpack what growing a fashion brand entailed before and after social media, she talks about the influence her mother, Fatima Toffar had on her as a designer and business woman, and she shares some of the challenges she faced growing her business as a single mom of an autistic toddler.
Quintus Jansen is a dancer and choreographer extraordinaire who is the founder of Dance Culture Studios and Creative Culture Productions. He has also performed on the international stage and has featured as a dancer and choreographer on TV shows such as 'So You Think You Can Dance SA', 'Strictly Come Dancing SA' and is also the producer of the South African franchise of the hit dance show 'World of Dance SA'.
Kelli Stirret is the founder of Even Keel Ops. Kelli helps creative business owners grow their businesses and unload overwhelm via training, strategy, and support. Kelli is from South Carolina, she is a mother and a significant other, an avid reader, an amateur photographer, a shell hunter, and a sugar skull collector. Kelli shares her journey from corporate hustle to entrepreneur and how she now helps other businesses overcome the overwhelm of the digital operational aspects of their business.
